How can we use audio to tell compelling, dynamic stories? And how do we use podcasting to reach a wide audience?

Despite huge advances in media technology over the years, radio continues to be an effective and flexible means for telling a story and broadcasting it to a wide audience. And with the internet playing an increasingly large role in most people’s daily lives, audio podcasting has emerged as a powerful and accessible tool for the average citizen to communicate his/her stories and ideas to the greater population.

This workshop will take you through the steps of developing, producing and editing a compelling audio story, and then show you how to distribute it over the internet on a blog and/or podcast.

Through hands-on demonstrations and exercises, you’ll learn the basics of audio production and editing, how to conduct a successful interview, and how to apply the basic tenets of storytelling to your audio production.

If you’re new to the idea of blogging, you’ll learn the basics of creating an online identity and starting a WordPress website. If you already have a blog, you’ll learn to implement a podcast into your workflow, and syndicate it over RSS and in the iTunes store.

You’ll leave the class with one (or more) quality audio segment(s) which you’ll then distribute on your own personal blog/podcast.

The workshop will cover:

The principles and components of a compelling story
The ethics and practices of conducting a solid interview
Basic audio recording and editing using free software (Audacity)
Setting up a WordPress blog
Distributing a podcast on your blog and iTunes

About the Instructor

“I feel that it is through stories that we learn from the past, understand the present, and craft the future.

After having worked for many years as an actor and host in film, television and theatre, my passion for storytelling drew me towards the crafts of writing and directing in order bring my own stories to life on stage or screen. To that end, I founded my own production company, Last Tape Productions, in 2007.

Meanwhile, I learned audio production as a hobby in order to produce my own music. This led to my participation in several podcasts and blogs as a writer, host, and producer, notably Stark Raving Sane, The Bard Brawl, Artistic Things and The Last Tape.

I’m very much looking forward to sharing my knowledge with all aspiring podcasters, and to hearing what unique stories emerge from the workshop at Sattya.â€
