7.11 SARI SOLDIERS
Director: Julie Bridgham

Filmed over three years during the most historic and pivotal time in Nepal’s modern history, The Sari Soldiers is an extraordinary story of six women’s courageous efforts to shape Nepal’s future in the midst of an escalating civil war against Maoist insurgents, and the King’s crackdown on civil liberties. When Devi, mother of a 15-year-old girl, witnesses her niece being tortured and murdered by the Royal Nepal Army, she speaks publicly about the atrocity. The army abducts her daughter in retaliation, and Devi embarks on a three-year struggle to uncover her daughter’s fate and see justice done.

The Sari Soldiers follows her and five other brave women, including Maoist Commander Kranti; Royal Nepal Army Officer Rajani; Krishna, a monarchist from a rural community who leads a rebellion against the Maoists; Mandira, a human rights lawyer; and Ram Kumari, a young student activist shaping the protests to reclaim democracy. The Sari Soldiers intimately delves into the extraordinary journey of these women on opposing sides of the conflict, through the democratic revolution that reshapes the country’s future.

28.11 ON THE ROAD WITH THE RED GOD: MACHHENDRANATH
Director: Kesang Tseten

Every 12 years, impassioned devotees pull a 65-feet tall unwieldy chariot in the Kathmandu Valley, its rider an enigmatic god worshipped by Hindu and Buddhist, on a months-long journey proceeded by abundant ritual and animal sacrifice..

The enterprise calls for extreme cooperation and rigorous observance of ritual in the building, sanctification and pulling of the chariot. But the jatra (festival) is an arena of gritty reality, where participants vie for everything from a share of ritual meat, to status and proximity to the god. The chariot teeters, as does the community, between chaos and order, conflict or solidarity. Thus, every 12 years, the same question: will the journey succeed?

"PUNK SYNDROME" FINLAND, 2012
Directors: Jukka Kärkkäinen, J-P Passi
Winner of The Finnish State Price for Film 2012!

The Punk Syndrome is a documentary film about the essence of punk and about the most kick ass band in Finland. The band members have mental disabilities and it is their story of rebel against our mainstream values and ideas.

We follow these professional musicians on their journey from obscurity to popularity. We follow them as they fight and fall in love, as they laugh, cry, drink and fight over who gets to sit in the front on the tour bus, and when it is time to make up and go and face the audience.

The band´s songs are about the problems in the society as well as about everyday life: how going to the pedicurist sucks and the misery of living in a group home.

The guys give piece of their mind to both politicians and people whose attitudes towards those of us with intellectual disabilities need improvement.

Punk Syndrome team will have personal video greetings from Finland to our Nepal audience who are the first to see the film in Asia!

Warm welcome to all x PHOTO: J-P Passi
