Help Rakesh Fight Cancer

Rakesh Patel Kulmi, aged 23, who hails from Garuda VDC Rautahat , a life-time academic topper who has fought his way from the bottom to win full scholarship at Pulchowk Engineering College by scoring 88% and topping at Pachimanchal Regional Campus. His future looked promising, while his family along with his entire village had huge hopes and expectations of him. But life had something else planned. His dreams and world came crashing down four months ago when he was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (Stage 1), which later developed into stage 2 and a month ago it developed into Stage 3 Acute Leukemia.

Doctors have prescribed an urgent Bone Marrow Transplant as his condition is rapidly deteriorating. He was admitted at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, where his elder sister was a match for the transplant. But the family couldn’t afford the surgery, his farther is a construction worker who supports the family, and his elder brother is a school teacher who was the sole sponsor for his education. The surgery would cost 25 lakhs and the follow ups and medications would cost additional 15 lakhs. Even if the family sells off everything they own, it would only generate 4 lakh (which they are willing to), but still wouldn’t be enough.

His friends, family and people of community are desperately trying to raise funds for his surgery. So far 10 lakhs have been collected/pledged from various sources, such as Fundrazr.com, various student campaigns and fundraising campaign by his friends and family in Rautahat.

But still it is not enough.

He was just given a round of chemo as his platelet count dropped to 10000 (normal count is 150000-400000). He is now stable and his platelet count is rising, and the doctors have ran a new bone marrow tests to see if he is still producing antibodies which kill his platelets and other vital cells. If everything goes well, he would be ready for surgery within the next 5 days. He will have to be moved to India immediately and given new bone marrow.


This is the only hope. Doctors say for his age there is huge chance that he recovers and continues to live a healthy life. But he needs this surgery as soon as possible.

A lot of people have said, with so much money so many lives could be saved. We say life is priceless, we cannot undervalue a life or compare it with others or in this case many others. When we help Rakesh, we don’t only help him. We help his family and his community. A chance is what he deserves.

And together we can give him that Chance to fight this life-threatening disease with dignity.
